The Price of Education

As a fellow victim of rising tuition and the increasing financial burden of higher education costs in the United States, I can sometimes find myself questioning if I'm always getting my money's worth. In a recent conversation with my roommate, I learned that she pays about 5000 yuan (about $800) for an entire year at East China Normal University (which is the second best teaching university in the country). She was absolutely shocked when I told her my program fee to study at ECNU was $13000 for a single semester.

So I ask you, my dear reader, why are Americans so grossly overcharged to pursue higher education? Shouldn't society be promoting and encouraging students by providing incentives and helping students along the way instead of slapping them with $100,000 of debt by the time they finish their undergrad?

If Chinese students are able to graduate from ECNU and go on to have extremely prosperous careers and futures without having to pay outrageous fees, so why am I and the rest of the United States subjected such burden and debt?
