Life without books, class, meetings, and constant scheduling this past month has been quite an adventure on its own. But more like a sit on the couch, watch 10 hours of TV a day, and stuff my face with chocolate type of adventure. It's definitely been a good break from the usual, but it has made me all the more eager for the upcoming months.
I can't believe I'll be leaving for Guatamala in 4 short days, and then to Shanghai in a little over a month. I'm really excited, but also soooo nervous, especially for my semester in Shanghai. I know absolutely ZERO Chinese. Yup, ZERO. But--I know what a lot of you might be thinking--I'm half Chinese, right? I got to know at least a little bit of Chinese. But, no, it didn't work out that way--so I'm walking into a completely new city with no language ability whatsoever.
I'm also very excited for my service trip to Guatamala next week. I'm still not exactly sure what service projects I'll be doing, but I'm going to take whatever it is head-on.
Lately I've been super confused about what the heck I want to do with my life. I'm a biology major, international development and conflict management minor, who spent her summer in Indonesia, and is forgoing a semester of science requirements to study Chinese with a bunch of linguistics and business majors. Plus, I was in student government and the university judiciary. So..... if anyone can figure out a career that pulls all this together, I'd be pretty grateful.
People keep telling me not to worry about the future--that by the time I graduate, there will be careers I can pursue that haven't even been invented yet. And, half of myself believes that--but half is still worried. I don't think I've ever held solely to a single opinion, and always find myself second-guessing my beliefs and values. But I guess that's pretty normal, or at least that's what I've been told.
But, thankfully, I do have one goal that I really want to make happen. Drumroll please...
LIFE GOAL #1: Plant my feet on every continent before I'm 30
CURRENT PROGRESS:
North America: check!
South America: tbd...
Europe: check!
Africa: tbd...
Asia: check!
Australia: tbd....
Antartica: tbd, and this may be tricky....
From the way I look at it, I have 11 more years to hit 4 more continents! Now, I just have to find a way to pay for it all....
LIFE GOAL #2: Figure out what to do after undergrad
PROGRESS: ......
Sooooo for now I'm still caught in the limbo of growing up, full of confusion and excitement--and I'm pretty sure there's a lot of excitement up ahead!!!
